The table illustrates the proportion of owned houses and accommodation in rented in England and Wales in the period of 1918 to 2011.
It is clear that there was an upward trend of owning households between 1918 and 2011, meanwhile, there was a downward tendency of renting accommodation in the same period.
Initially, the percentage of accomodation in owned increased through years, from 1918 to 2001, which remained unchanged between 1939 and 1953, at roughly 32%. Afterward, it went up significantly to 68% approximately and reached a peak at 69% in 2001. Strikingly, the proportion of owned houses decreased by 5% in ten years later.
It is apparent that in the beginning of 19th century, the percentage of departments rented was responsible for the highest proportion amongst other categories, was roughly 78%. Strikingly, it went down and remained stable between 1939 and 1953, at 68%. Before continuing to grow again in 2011, the percentage of rented accommodation declined remarkably, from 68% to 31% approximately through many decades.
