Two road tunnels in an Australia city
The picture compares two underground tunnels constructed in a city in Australia.
It is noticeable that while Tunnel A goes under a river that has a bridge linking the two banks for vehicles, Tunnel B is an alternative for a road on the surface.
The construction of Tunnel A took place over a five-year period, from 1987 to 1992 and the budget for this was roughly 556 million dollars. This underground passage lengths 2.2 kilometers and lies 25 meters below the city surface, underneath the riverbed layer of stone and sand. This pathway consists of a double set of tubes, each of which allows two four-wheeled vehicles to travel side-by-side at the same time.
On the other hand, Tunnel B was built from 2004 and it took merely three years to finish. This development costs the city council twice the amount spent for Tunnel A, at approximately 1.1 billion dollars. Relatively, Tunnel B is 3.6 kilometers long and positioned 10 meters lower than Tunnel A. It is a second option for the surface road, accommodating 3 vehicles silmultaneously in each of the twin tube.
