The diagram illustrates the method in which a hydroelectric power station is producing power. Overall, the electricity in this station is generated through flow of water from one reservoir to another. Electricity generation is taking place during the day whereas during night, water is pumped back to a high-level reservoir.
Initially, water from a river is collected in a reservoir which is on a higher level. This reservoir is built by constructing a dam that obstructs the river flow. From here, the water flows through an intake towards the turbines which operate the generator connected to them in the power station. This water then flows into a low-level reservoir. Electricity produced in the power station is distributed through the power lines to a national grid.
The flow of water is opposite during night. The water from the low-level reservoir passes through the turbines. These turbines pump the water back toward the high-level reservoir which is re-used the following day.
